I have spent many years in Italy as student, archaeologist, art and architectural historian, university lecturer, Rome Prize winner, and frequent traveler. Rome and Umbria are the places I always come back to, but I have lived in Florence and Venice, and I’ve spent several summers in Southern Italy, too.

In June-July 2026 I had a 2-week residency in Venice sponsored by the American Academy in Rome where I continued work on my project “A Culture of Enclosure, A Culture of Control,” about the physical manifestations of social, religious, and economic segregation in Venice in the period of the Jewish Ghetto. Following the residency I gave a talk about the project at the Academy in Rome.

In 2018 I joined Art Workshop International to teach small 2-week summer classes about the history, art and architecture of Assisi and Umbria, with a special focus on the Middle Ages. You can read about the class here, and follow my post about medieval Italy on Facebook here.
